So What Happens at These Shoots Anyway?

Many clients ask me what to expect at a session, so I'll lay it out for ya!

We will usually meet either an outdoor location in the early morning or late afternoon for best light, or in your home mid-morning for a more personal, intimate session. Expect to be with me for about 1 to 1-1/2 hours, during which we'll walk around and get shots along the way.

If I'm photographing children, I will spend some time getting to know them so they feel comfortable with me; I have two young kids of my own and I know they take some time to warm up, but it usually doesn't take long because I love to get down on their level and show them what I can do with my camera and ask them about their favorite things and what makes them laugh. Pretty soon, their true colors start to show and I can just start snapping away, while capturing their true essence. Of course, I will always guide and give direction; I understand having someone with a camera in your face isn't always the most natural thing, but my goal is to almost become unnoticed so you just start to interact. THAT'S when a shoot becomes heavenly.

What to Wear

The next question I usually get is, "What on earth do I wear??" I can't say that there's only one perfect color, or one perfect outfit for everyone, but I can tell give you a general idea and I can certainly tell you what NOT to wear.

I've heard some photographers say to consider your whole family as one big outfit--you don't want to match exactly, but you DO want to compliment one another. Different colors and textures are great among a group, with a general color scheme.

What to consider wearing:

Solid colors that flatter you; chocolate brown, black, white, jeans (colors are not limited to these only)--these are timeless and universally flattering for the most part. Since these are neutrals, consider adding something with a pop of color for visual interest...like a colorful scarf or fun hat. If you've ever seen TLC's What Not to Wear, Stacey and Clinton will always talk about pairing neutrals with texture, pattern and shine. This is a good rule to follow, but in light of that, consider the following:

What NOT to wear:

Stay away from huge logos (or any logo for that matter), distracting patterns (including bold stripes, which widen a torso, for example), and clothes that are so noticeable that you, the subject, go unnoticed. The idea is to ENHANCE who YOU are...

Basically, do you want me to photograph YOU, or your CLOTHES? This should help you make your decision in the end. And it never hurts to go through my gallery of pictures and pick out families who chose clothes that complimented each other and themselves. You'll get ideas and pick and choose to create your own look.

For little kids and babies, it's always fun to have accessories like hats, bows, headbands, etc, which are fun to throw in a couple of photos, but can always be removed if we decide they don't work.

Lastly, make sure that your hands and feet are presentable; you never know when there will be a barefoot shot, or your hand will be in a closeup, holding your newborn baby. Don't stress about minor blemishes or stray hairs--I will do my best to edit these. But please be aware that my style of photography is not super airbrushed because then, I feel like I wouldn't be capturing the real you.

The Value of Custom Portraiture

I've had a few people ask me about my changes (increases) in pricing...and I have not forgotten to post. I am being thoughtful over every single detail before I publish it for the "world" to see.

In the meantime, read this funny analogy about why custom portraiture shouldn't come cheap--well at least GOOD custom portraiture.

I took this from the blog of Malibu-based photographer, Katie Davis of ClaireAlyse Photography http://www.clairealysephotography.com:

“I want professional photos of my family, but my brother’s friend’s cousin’s daughter’s babysitter just got a really nice camera and she’ll take photos of us and give me a disk of all the images for only $90. She has a website, so she is legit.”

Here is an analogy for you:

I have bad hair. It’s too thick, it’s sorta curly, sorta wavy, frizzy and a bad ashy brown color. My brother’s friend’s cousin’s daughter’s babysitter Jackie will cut, weave and blow dry my hair for $90. My other option is going to Jeff the hair stylist at the salon across the street. He charges me $250 for a cut, weave and blow dry. I decide to try both.

I’m sitting in Jackie’s laundry room waiting for her to gather her things when I realize she’s going to wash my hair in the utility sink. Leaning over the sink kneeling on a folding chair proves a little difficult, she gets shampoo in my eye and water drips down my neck into my shirt. We go in the house and she sits me down in her dining room, her husband is sitting on the couch watching Nascar and drinking a 40. He leans forward to grab a bag of chips and I notice his butt-crack. I remind myself that Jackie only charges $90, she probably can’t afford to rent a station in a salon, so I divert my eyes and forgive her. She begins to cut my hair. It seems to be taking quite awhile. She looks a little nervous. I remember that she’s still fairly new to cutting hair. I rationalize that she’s still better than I’d be at it, after all. Plus, she has like 500 fans on her Facebook page, and that has to mean something, right? Jackie disappears to mix my color. She’s gone for a long time. I get nervous that she doesn’t know what she’s doing. What if she screws it up and my hair falls out? I start to wonder… maybe there is a REASON why she only charges $90. Is that the only way she can get clients? Then Jackie weaves a beautiful blond into my hair. I try to forget about my nerves and begin to get excited. A cut and color for only 90 bucks, I can’t wait to show everyone my hair! She finishes up the blow dry and I turn to the mirror to discover its really yellow and brassy. The cut is a uneven and boxy. I take a deep breath and calm myself down. Well, it looks better than it did before, I guess, and I only paid $90. The next day I meet up with some girlfriends for drinks. No one says anything about my hair, and I’m afraid to ask what they think because I know it just looks average, or maybe even bad. I feel disappointed. $90 seemed like such a great deal.

I suppose it’s only a deal if the value is greater than $90.

Two months pass and I find myself sitting at Jeff’s station in the salon across the street. The receptionist offers me a cold drink and the most recent issue of People magazine. Jeff comes over introduces himself and asks me what I’d like to accomplish today. We talk for a few minutes about the specific color of blond I’m looking for. He asks me questions about how I style my hair, what I like, what I don’t like, and tells me a little about whats in style right now. Jeff seems as excited as I am for my new look. I look around to see all the latest flat irons, blow dryers, collections of brushes and combs. Jeff rattles off instructions to his assistant while examining my hair and she’s back in a jiffy with 4 bowls of color. As Jeff begins to weave in and out of my hair with light blond and medium honey and chestnut brown I close my eyes and listen to the calming music on the satellite radio. I feel relaxed and confident. I trust him. I sit with my hair under the dryer and once again I’m offered a cold drink and a magazine. Jeff comes over to inspect the progression of the color. He exclaims how perfect it looks and brings me to the shampoo station. There is a big cushy leather recliner. I put my head back and he begins to wash. The shampoo smells like mint and lavender and he spends an extra few minutes on a mini scalp massage. Jeff dries and styles my hair with ease. When he’s finished he spins my chair around and I hardly recognize myself in the mirror. I look like I belong in a fashion magazine. The cut frames my face perfectly. It’s sassy with a hint of modern, just the right amount to suit my style. The color shimmers as I turn my head. It seems almost as if there are thousands of shades of blond intertwined throughout the locks of hair. It reminds me of what my hair looked like when I was little, after spending all summer in the sun. I feel proud. I meet up with some friends for lunch the next day. They must have commented on my hair 10 times. One of them demanded Jeff’s phone number and asked me how much he charged. “$250″, I told her. She replied, “Well it looks a-MAZE-ing, what a great deal.”

The $90 Jackie charged me wasn’t a great deal. The $250 Jeff charged me was. How is that possible? They both gave me a cut, weave and blow dry.

The difference was the experience and the quality. The $250 that Jeff charged me included a cold diet coke, and comfy chair, state of the art equipment and supplies, experience, knowledge, and a quality product. It included a feeling of pride and excitement that lasted until it was time to return for more. The $90 Jackie charged me included cheap dye, dull scissors, a wet shirt and a butt-crack.

When I thought about it later, I thought, well wouldn’t it be great to find someone who was somewhere in between, you know, someone who is amazing and cheap? But the problem is there is no such thing as in between. When someone offers quality, they have to charge for it, they have to cover the cost of running the business, continuing education, supplies, marketing, and they have to cut themselves a paycheck. Otherwise they are not running a business, they are the proud President of a Non-Profit Organization.

So if you find yourself presented with what seems like a “great deal” for your family photos, ask yourself if the $90 is worth an experience with Jackie. Personally, as a client, I’d rather pay $250 for an experience that feels priceless, than waste $90 on something sub par. Value is a magical thing.

Just a note to all of my past and future clients; the pricing and packages listed under Investment apply now through August 31st, 2010 only. I will soon be posting new pricing and packages that include prints and/or products, and the digital negatives will only be given to clients when a minimum print purchase is made.

This is a decision I make with pride, and one I do for the sake of my clients as well; I strongly feel that if you are to spend money on getting your portraits taken, you should have professional high-quality prints by which to remember your session. But I understand that my clients like to own their digital negatives, and so I will be giving them to clients who make a minimum print/product order.

Rest assured that the pricing will not increase substantially, it will just be adjusted to make up for these changes so you have something tangible to take from your session.

Please note: if you have--or are going to--book a session on or after September 1st, the new pricing will apply to you. As soon as the information is published, you will be the first to know.

This little doll is 18 months old, and I couldn't have asked for a better session! I seriously did not have to direct her in anyway...she posed, laughed, smiled, danced--and did it all on her own without much prompting. It was a dream, I tell you!!! And even more fun--I went to high school with her mama and we reconnected through Facebook. I heart Facebook. :) It was so fun to see an old friend and of course, photograph a precious girl in a tutu! She is all-girl, that's for sure!

Many people assume that a photographer must have a TON of AMAZING pictures of their kids. Well you know what they say about "assuming," so I won't go any further...

So realizing that my business was blessing other families and not my own when it came to visual documentation, I decided I needed to take a couple photos of my own children--especially my daughter who just turned 18 months and is a "pip", as my Nana would say. Okay, so it really was a session all about my little girl since my son has so many pictures, being the firstborn. But he's in one pic, at least and a darn cute one at that!

Pricing Changes

Well, now that I've been in business for myself for about 5 months, I'm starting to work out all the kinks, which also include me analyzing just how much time and effort goes into each of my sessions. Many people think that when we do a one-hour session, I go home, put the images on a disk and we're good to go--easy money, right? Well, the real time and effort is not the session, but what I do at home, into the night, on my computer. Your session could take more than 10 hours, depending on just how much customization is applied, how successful the session was and how many images I choose to give the client.

Due to this, I am changing my prices, effective today (some have actually decreased, so don't panic). See the sidebar on the right and click on "Investment" to see the updates. Please rest assured that if you have already booked a session with me, I will honor the price originally quoted.

Most notably, I will be charging a $5 packaging/shipping fee if you cannot pick up your disk from my home (which is in Surprise). I will also be charging a $20 trip fee for anything beyond 20 miles from my home.

Snow in AZ!

This past weekend, we spent some time with our best friends at a cabin in Prescott and believe it or not, we were snowed in!! So with nothing to do but eat, sleep and play in the snow, we made the most of it! And of course, I couldn't keep my camera zipped up just because I was taking a "break" from life...I am going to add more when I get the chance, but had to post this of one of my favorite little girls...

We've been friends with this family for quite some time; my husband played high school football with the dad and we all kept in touch through college, and even as we began to start our own families, we've remained close. So it's been fun to see the Fishers add not one--but two--girls to their clan! And how precious are THEY?!

The Fishers are overseas missionaries who literally sacrifice so much for so many; so it was fun to pamper THEM for a change and capture their family just being themselves.

This was one of my first "studio-like" shoots, in which I am experimenting with new backgrounds, etc. It's a learning process for sure--but so fun!

Baby brudda

Well, this is another post in a series of mini-sessions I am doing of the neighborhood kids--so you may recognize the same scenery in the last couple posts. I am in love with the lighting the park outside our house gets the same time every afternoon; it's almost magical!

These sweet kiddos are brother and sister; I love how big sis calls her little bro, "baby brudda" (at least it sounds like that when she beckons him...so sweet. Ah, the little things.

And get a load of big sister's baby blues; watch out, Dad--you're going to be fighting the boys off sooner than you think!

Daddy's Girl

This is our little neighbor, who just turned 2. Is she not the cutest thing? I can't get over the sweet bond she has with her dad--she truly is a daddy's girl in every sense of the word. Did I mention that my son, Jack, has a crush on her? Yes, she's a younger woman, but we all know women mature earlier than men, so it works out.

These were taken at the park outside our house, where we play pretty much every night together as part of our routine. Little "V" has traditions with her dad--sitting in the tree, being thrown VERY high into the sky, among other activities that make us moms shudder at times--but hey--dads can do anything, right? They're superheroes. Dads are here to make sure their kids have fun; moms are here to make sure their kids stay alive...or something like that...

Today, I had my very first newborn session--well she's 6 weeks, but that's close enough, right?

Little Paisley was SUCH a trooper, putting up with all my crazy ideas. She definitely protested being in the nude, and decided to pee on her dad to teach him a lesson. I don't blame you, Paisley.

What a darling family...I really enjoyed photographing you guys, and love the fact that you didn't mind being my guinea pigs! You daughter is beautiful--and you guys are such great parents already!

Build Me Up, Buttercup!

I'm having so much fun building up my portfolio--even if it's not through official shoots. And for those of you who are wanting to see more work before you invest in my services, here ya go!

Today, I realized that I've been so busy taking pictures of other people's kids that I haven't even taken that many of my own! So I planned to spend the afternoon outside at my kiddos' favorite place: the park just 20 feet from our house. The lighting was perfect, the weather beautiful, and all the neighbor kids were out to play. Couldn't have been any better--here are some shots I got. And can I just say that I am so excited that I actually got a bow to stay in Jane's hair for the first time ever?! So cute. Oh, and I couldn't resist taking pictures of the neighbor kids either, so don't think these are ALL of my children.

Sidenote: my first ever newborn shoot will take place this Thursday...I absolutely CANNOT WAIT! Stay tuned!

I love photographing kids...it's what got me into photography in the first place. There's something about their spontaneity and the fact that just them being themselves makes for the most touching pictures. Here are some of my favorite shots from various shoots, and some of my own kiddos (c'mon, they gotta make the blog too!)

Signature Session | $200 (up to four people; $25 each additional person)
Minimum Print/Product Purchase | $125

The signature session includes the following session types: family, child, maternity, newborn, couples/engagement; see below for discounted maternity/newborn combo session; senior portraits are NOT a signature session--see separate pricing).

The session fee covers the session itself, within 25 miles of my home in Surprise (85388)*, a password-protected online gallery and shopping cart, and hand-edited digital proofs (I spend an average of 10-15 hours on every session, not including order placement). Digital negatives are NOT included in this fee, but will be given with a minimum print/product purchase of $125.

I offer professional high-quality prints of various sizes, as well as gallery wrap canvases, custom albums and custom-designed greeting cards and announcements. Ask me about any additional products; I can design almost anything, I just need to know what you want!

For those of you on a budget, please keep in mind that you are only paying for the session fee at the time of your session; the typical turnaround time for viewing your online gallery is 3-4 weeks. So you will have at least a month before you need to consider making your print/product purchase; I will also keep your digital negatives for one year after your session, so you may reorder at any time.

Maternity & Newborn Session | $350 (savings of $50 compared to booking sessions individually; payments may be divided per session)
Minimum purchase | $150 total for both sessions ($100 savings compared to booking sessions individually; this total may be divided among both sessions)

If you choose to book both a maternity session and a newborn session at the same time, you will save $150 total.

Please book your maternity session to be held between 32-36 weeks of pregnancy.

Newborn sessions are best held within the first two weeks of your baby's birth (but I will always do a session, no matter how old your baby!) Please book your newborn session within the last two months of your pregnancy to ensure availability.

Seasonal Mini Session Packages | $125

For those who love custom portraiture, but cannot afford the whole shebang, I will be offering limited mini sessions throughout the year that will include 5-10 digital negatives and your choice of 1- 11x14 or 1-8x10 and 1-5x7; additional prints and products will be available for purchase (not included in the $125). Subscribe to my blog or look me up on Facebook under kbh photography to keep up with any announcements or updates, such as the dates and times of these limited mini sessions.

Senior Portrait Details and Pricing

Full Senior Session | $300
Minimum Purchase | $100 (toward prints, products, custom graduation announcements)

The full session covers a 1-2 hour on-location session, unlimited outfit changes, hand-editing of images and about 20-30 images from which to choose in an online gallery. Once minimum purchase is met, I will give you the digital negatives on a disk as a gift.

Express Senior Session | $150
Minimum Purchase | $100

The Express session covers a 45-minute on-location session (with as many outfit changes as you can fit into this shorter session), hand-editing of images and about 10 images from which to choose in an online gallery. Once minimum purchase is met, I will give you the digital negatives on a disk as a gift. Additional negatives may be added to disk for $20 per image/negative.

*A flat rate travel fee of $25 will apply to any session beyond the 25-mile radius

The Chick Behind the Camera

I'm Kristin Hayward, the chick behind the camera and the name behind the "kbh". I married my high school sweetheart and we have two hilarious kiddos, who are always great guinea pigs for my ever-present camera.

I love capturing life as it happens: the true, candid and telling moments that might normally go unnoticed. Whether it's a child making a discovery or a shared moment between a newly engaged couple, I want to be able to document it so it becomes a lasting memory for those who would cherish it most. Although I love a good portrait of everyone smiling while looking at the camera (and these are great for a Christmas card!), it's the unplanned, candid moments that happen during the session that end up being the favorites in the end. If your toddler makes her signature frown-face when she's mad and I can capture that for you, I promise that will mean more to you one day than a posed stance with folded hands and a forced smile. It's YOU & YOUR FAMILY that I hope to freeze in time, not a "Stepford" version of you (hopefully you get my allusion there!)

In each session, I always hope to unwrap the personalities of my clients and translate this into meaningful custom images that represent who they are as individuals. (And of course, I love it when I get to work with good sports who will put up with my often-crazy ideas...)

This little cutie pie just turned one, and I was honored to do his first year pics. His parents are equally as adorable, and were so fun to work with (I went to high school with the mom/wife and always remembered her as the one with beautiful green eyes and an amazing smile).

Little "M" was sooo curious, and was more interested in making discoveries than in posing for the camera, but, hey--he's got better things to do and I don't blame him! Thanks for being such great sports, you guys!

This picture-perfect couple is none other than my beautiful sister-in-law and her fiancee, whom we are so excited to welcome into the fam! They were so fun, and SO patient with me, especially since they were my first engagement shoot! But it couldn't have been more natural, thanks to them being so absolutely in love with one another. Congratulations, you guys!
